Short answer
Instagram account recovery in Canada starts with Instagram’s own routes: request a review on a disabled notice, or use instagram.com/hacked if someone took over the account. Official steps that come first
- If you see a disabled or suspended notice, tap it and request a review. Work through every screen, including any selfie check.
- If the email, phone or password was changed, go to instagram.com/hacked on a device you have used for Instagram before.
- Look in your inbox and spam for an Instagram email about the change. Its undo link is time limited, so use it first.
- A video selfie request should be done in daylight, face on, with the head turns shown on screen.
- Send one complete appeal, then watch the email on the account for the reply.
What is different in Canada
- Your Canadian number: Canada shares the +1 country code with the USA, so enter the full ten digits. If you lost the SIM or someone ported your number, call Rogers, Bell, Telus or your other carrier and ask them to lock the number before you start recovery.
- Fraud reporting: the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca, 1-888-495-8501) takes fraud and cybercrime reports, and your local police can take a report as well. Tell your bank straight away if money moved, and consider a credit report alert with Equifax Canada and TransUnion if identity details leaked.
- French and English notices: the notice follows your phone or account language. Screenshot it as it appears. We work over WhatsApp or email in English.
- Under 18 and sextortion: Cybertip.ca, run by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, takes reports about online sexual exploitation, including sextortion of young people. Read what to do about sextortion on Instagram first and do not pay.
- News content: since August 2023 Meta has blocked news links and posts for Canadian users on Instagram and Facebook after the Online News Act. That is a separate matter from a disabled account, so do not assume a missing news post means you were banned.
What not to do
- Don’t pay or message anyone from a DM who says they can “open” your account.
- Don’t share your password or login codes with anyone, including us.
- Don’t create new accounts to plead with Instagram, and don’t send the same appeal over and over.
