Short answer
When someone changes the email on your account, Instagram usually sends a message to the old address with a link to undo it. That link is your best first shot. Check your spam folder too.
Do these in order
- Search your old inbox for mail from Instagram about a changed email, phone or password.
- Tap the “secure your account” or revert option in it.
- If it’s expired or missing, go to instagram.com/hacked and follow the prompts.
- Choose the video selfie option if it’s offered. It’s often the way back when the email is gone.
- Once you’re in, change the password, remove unknown devices and turn on an authenticator app.

Things that make it worse
- Hitting the reset button on every screen repeatedly.
- Making a new account and messaging your followers as if it’s a new start. Warn them from a friend’s account instead.
- Sending ID, selfies or codes to “recovery experts” in DMs. That’s how people get hacked twice.
If the account got disabled meanwhile
