Short answer
Instagram can remove a scam account, but it can’t refund you. Your bank, card issuer or payment app is where money comes back, if it can.
Getting your money back
- Card: ask your bank for a chargeback quickly.
- PayPal goods and services: open a dispute.
- Bank transfer, Zelle or crypto: tell your bank right away. Recovery is harder.
- Report it to your local fraud agency too.
Save evidence before they delete it
- Screenshots of the profile, posts and DMs with dates.
- Payment receipts and the account they paid to.
- The username and profile link, since handles change.
Report the account
In the app, report the profile as a scam or fraud, and report the DMs. If they’re copying a real shop, that shop can report impersonation, see business impersonation. Fake giveaway? See fake giveaway accounts.
Watch for “recovery” scams
After a scam, people often get DMs offering to get the money back for a fee. Those are scams too. Nobody can hack your money back.
