The three states

Disabled by Instagram. You see a message that your account was disabled or suspended, often with a “Disagree” or appeal option. This is the one you can appeal.
Deactivated by you. Logging in turns it back on. Nothing is lost.
Deleted. If you asked for deletion, you usually get a window to cancel it, then it’s gone. Instagram says the process can take up to 90 days.

How to check properly

Log in from the app, not the web, so you see the full message.
Check the email on the account for notices from Instagram.
Check Account Center on a linked Facebook account if you have one.
