Short answer
Most short and “OG” handles (one word, three or four letters, a clean first name) were grabbed years ago. You can’t reserve one, and Instagram won’t hand it over just because you want it. So the real question is who’s sitting on it and why.
Step one: see what you’re dealing with
- Free but blocked. It says “not available” and there’s no profile. See username not available but no account.
- A live, active account. A real person using it is usually a dead end.
- A dead profile. No posts in years, no activity.
- A squatter. A handle parked on a blank account, often to resell.
What doesn’t work
- DMing the owner a lowball offer. Selling handles breaks Instagram’s terms and it’s where most scams start.
- Adding dots and underscores and hoping. It’s a different handle, not the OG one.
- Paying a stranger who wants your login or says they “know someone at Meta”.
What can work
- Waiting, if the holder just renamed or deleted. The name can free up.

- A claim through Instagram’s own processes for dead or squatting accounts, where it fits.
