“Sorry, this page isn’t available” on the profile and “username isn’t available” in settings happen together a lot. The account still exists in Instagram’s system, just hidden. Until that account is fully gone, the handle stays locked.

Why it happens

Disabled or suspended account. Hidden from everyone while it can still be appealed.
Temporarily deactivated. The owner hid it and can come back any time.
Pending deletion. Deletion can take up to 90 days to finish.
Recent rename. The previous owner may be able to switch back for a while.
Blocked words. Some handles are restricted and simply can’t be used.

What to try yourself

Check again in two to four weeks, in the edit profile field, not by visiting the URL.
Try from a logged-out sign-up screen to rule out a glitch on your account.
Look up the handle on other platforms or search engines to see who had it.
