Short answer
It depends on how the name left the account. Instagram gives a rough timeline for deletions, users regularly report a hold of about 14 days after renaming, and nothing at all for handles held by dormant accounts. Disabled accounts often keep their handle reserved.
The common scenarios
- Someone renamed their account. The old name is often held for a couple of weeks so the owner can switch back. After that it’s first come, first served.
- The account was deleted. The owner can cancel for 30 days, and full deletion can take up to 90.
- The account was disabled. The handle may stay tied to it while the account can still be appealed, sometimes much longer.
- The account is just inactive. No release date. It may never free up by itself.
How to check properly
A profile page that won’t load doesn’t mean the name is free. Test it in the username field when editing your profile. If it says “not available” but nobody uses it, see username not available but no account.
If it never frees up
Waiting forever isn’t the only option. If the handle sits on a dead profile, a squatter, or an account using your name or brand, there may be an official route to get it onto your own profile.
