What to do first
Decide whether you really need a different username or only a different name. The display name shown above your bio can be changed without touching your @handle, and Instagram lets you edit it a limited number of times in a short window. If the goal is only to look different in search, change the name.
If you do want a new handle, check it’s free by typing it into the username field. Instagram tells you straight away when it’s taken.
Step 1: Know the format rules
Usernames can contain letters, numbers, periods and underscores. They can’t contain spaces or most symbols, and they have a length limit. A name that impersonates a person or brand, or breaks Instagram’s rules, can be removed later. If you run a brand, pick something that matches your business name and your other platforms.
Step 2: Make the change
Open your profile, tap Edit profile, then Username. Type the new name and save. Your old profile link stops working as soon as it changes, so do this when you’re ready to update links.
Step 3: Update everything that pointed to the old name
- The link in other social bios, email signatures and websites.
- QR codes, printed menus, cards and packaging.
- Linked Pages and ad accounts, if you run a business account.
- Collaborators who need to re-tag you.
Old @mentions inside other people’s captions don’t update automatically, so don’t expect them to redirect.
Step 4: Switching back or reusing an old name
Instagram’s Help Center says you may be able to reuse a name you had before, provided no one else has taken it and it isn’t held by an active account you don’t own. For about 14 days after a change you can usually revert, if the old handle has not been claimed. High-reach accounts may be reviewed before a change is approved, and followers may be notified of a new name.
If a name seems to be free but Instagram says it isn’t, it may be held by another account, including an inactive one. Read our note on usernames below, since claiming is a separate process.
What not to do
- Don’t swap names by chasing a “username swap” offer from a stranger. Account sales and handle trades are against Instagram’s rules and a common route to scams.
- Don’t change your name right before a campaign or link-in-bio launch. Give yourself time to repair links.
- Don’t paste in a number-heavy variant and expect to keep a brand identity.
If your old handle gets taken
Once someone claims it, you can’t reverse it. Report the new account only if it impersonates you or your business, using the impersonation form, and don’t file reports just because a name is similar.
