Check if it's really taken
Try the handle in Settings, then Edit profile, then Username. Search for it too. A handle can show as unavailable with no visible profile, for example if the account is deactivated or the name was only just released.
- Look for variations like dots, underscores or a number.
- Check the profile: is it active, or abandoned?
- Note when it last posted. It helps if you ask for help later.
Who holds it, and why it matters
A real person using their own name is very different from a squatter or an account copying your brand. The first you can't do much about. The second may break the platform's rules.
Routes that actually work
- Contact the owner politely if they are a real person. Never offer to buy the account.
- Report impersonation if the account pretends to be you or your business.
- Use the trademark report form if you own a registered mark and the account infringes it.
None of these guarantee the handle. If an account is removed, the name may free up later, but nobody can promise when.
What to avoid
Don't pay anyone to "sell" you a handle. Instagram's terms don't allow buying or selling usernames, and bought accounts can be taken back. Never share your password or login codes with anyone offering to place a handle on your account.
Good-enough alternatives
Add a short tag like hq, official, studio or your city, and use it everywhere. Matching handles across platforms matter as much as the exact name.
How Unbanz handles it
Through our Instagram username claim service we go after inactive and taken handles for you. Send the name you want and we'll tell you straight if it's doable.
Official sources
Platforms update their help pages and flows often. Always follow the wording on your own screen and the current official Help Center. Unbanz is an independent service and is not affiliated with Meta, Instagram or Facebook.
