What Instagram’s rules say
Instagram’s Terms of Use say you cannot attempt to buy, sell or transfer any aspect of your account, including your username, and the Community Guidelines prohibit impersonation and misleading accounts. Instagram does not run a public “inactive username” request form, and it does not promise to release a handle just because the account looks unused.
That means there is no guaranteed way to obtain a username someone else holds. Anyone who promises one with certainty, or offers to sell you an account, is describing something Instagram does not allow.
Check whether the handle is really taken
- Search for the username in the app and try it in Settings > Edit profile > Username on your own account.
- A username can show as unavailable even if no profile appears in search – for example, if it belongs to a deactivated account or was recently released.
- Usernames of deleted accounts are not always released immediately, and Instagram does not publish exact timings.
The trademark route
If you own a registered trademark and an account is using that mark in a way that infringes it – for example, by impersonating your brand or confusing customers – Instagram’s intellectual property reporting process is the legitimate route. You can find the current trademark report form through the Instagram Help Center by searching “trademark”.
- You will usually need the registration details (number, office, goods and services).
- The report needs to show how the account infringes the mark – an inactive account that does nothing may not qualify.
- Outcomes vary: Instagram may remove content, disable the account or take no action. A transfer of the handle to you is not guaranteed.
Impersonation of you or your brand
If an account is pretending to be you or your business, report it as impersonation through the app or the Help Center. This is about removing a misleading account, not about acquiring the username, but if the account is removed the handle may later become available.
Practical alternatives
- Add a short qualifier: hq, official, studio, app or your city.
- Use the same alternative across every platform so customers can find you.
- Contact the account owner politely if they are a real person; but do not offer to buy the account, which goes against Instagram’s Terms.
- Claim your handle early on new platforms to avoid the same problem elsewhere.
Watch out for username scams
Username “sellers” often take payment and disappear, or hand over accounts that are later reclaimed or disabled. Never give your password or login codes to anyone claiming they will place a handle on your account.
Protecting your brand name in the future
Whether or not you get the exact handle, a few steps help you avoid the same problem later:
- Register your brand name as a trademark in the markets where you trade, if it fits your business plans. It strengthens any future impersonation or infringement report.
- Secure matching handles on new and emerging platforms as soon as you launch.
- Keep your own accounts active and secure with two-factor authentication, so you do not lose a valuable handle to a hack.
- Use the same profile photo, bio wording and website across platforms so customers can tell the official account from look-alikes.
- Report impersonation quickly when you see it, with screenshots and links.
Instagram’s Help Center also explains how to apply for verification badges and Meta Verified subscriptions. These help people recognise authentic accounts, but they do not give you rights to another account’s username.
Finally, remember that usernames are only one part of discoverability. A consistent name in your bio, a link to your website and the same handle on other platforms often matter as much to customers as the exact @name.
How Unbanz handles it
Through our Instagram username service we assess requests individually. Send your current profile and the handle you want; we check availability and eligibility and tell you honestly whether there is a legitimate route and what it costs before any work. Many requests are not possible, and we will say so.
