Short answer
They sound alike but they’re different risks. In a swap you rename your account to something temporary so the other person can take your handle, then they free theirs up. In a claim, the handle you want ends up on your account, and no one trades anything.
How a swap goes wrong
- You rename first, and the other person disappears with your handle.
- Someone else grabs the freed-up name in the gap.
- There’s often money or a “favor” involved, and Instagram’s terms don’t allow selling usernames.
- Your followers and links break when the handle changes hands.
What a claim is
A claim works through the platform’s own routes, matched to the handle: an inactive or abandoned account, a squatter, or an account using your name, brand or trademark. You keep your login, and nobody gets your account or sells you one.
Which one fits
- Both of you are real people who know each other and want to trade? A swap is possible, but do it with care and never give a login.
- The handle is on a dead, parked or look-alike account? A claim is the safer route.
- The holder is an active stranger? Neither will work.
