Instagram removed a post or Reel: how to request a review

Short answer: open Account Status, tap the removed content, then choose Request review if it’s offered. Don’t repost the same content.

A removed post is usually a one-off. How you respond decides whether it stays that way. A calm, single appeal beats a stack of reposts.

What to do first

Open Account Status and find the removed item. Note the policy named, the date and any warning that says it counts toward a strike. Read the policy in the Community Guidelines before deciding whether to appeal.

Step 1: Find the item

Settings, then Account Status, then Removed content. You can also open the notification Instagram sent. If the notice includes a button for review, that’s your official route.

Step 2: Request a review

Tap the item and choose Request review. Meta’s own help page says you may be unable to appeal in some situations, such as after a prior request, so do it once and carefully. Meta doesn’t publish a timeline, and the result usually appears in the same place and by notification.

Step 3: Understand strikes

Removals can count towards strikes, and strikes expire. If you are near a limit, be careful with similar content. Our strikes guide explains how they add up.

Step 4: Next options

If the decision stays, you may see an option to appeal to the independent Oversight Board for eligible decisions. If not, treat the removal as final and learn from it. You can share a compliant version of the idea rather than the same post.

Read the policy that was applied

Every removal cites a part of the Community Guidelines, such as nudity, bullying, spam, dangerous organisations or false information. Open that section and read it as if you’d never seen your post. Many removals involve context that automated systems cannot read: satire, news reporting or quoted language. If the policy clearly covers your post, don’t appeal; reshape the idea. If your post fits an exception the policy describes, an appeal is reasonable.

Posting the idea again, properly

If the idea is fine and the execution wasn’t, you can share a new version that follows the rules. Change what actually triggered the removal, such as a caption, a thumbnail or a sound, and don’t post the identical file. Posting the same content again is the fastest way to turn one removal into a pattern.

Track your removals

Keep a simple note of each removal: date, policy, and whether you appealed. If you ever need to appeal a bigger decision, such as a restriction, you’ll be able to show that earlier issues were resolved or accepted.

What to write if there is a text box

Not every flow offers one, but if it does, keep it to three sentences: what the content is, why it follows the guideline cited, and any context that wasn’t visible such as a news setting, an educational purpose or an item you own. Avoid anger and avoid long histories. Reviewers read many requests; a clear sentence is easier to act on.

Should you re-upload instead?

Usually not. Re-posting the same content after removal can be treated as a repeat of the violation, and it can reduce your chances of a good outcome. If you edit a post to fix a genuine issue, such as removing a music clip or a link, that’s different from re-uploading unchanged material. Wait for the review result before you decide.
