First: are you eligible to go Live at all?
Instagram changed who can start a live video in 2025. Its Live help page now says that only Instagram users who have a public account with 1,000 followers or more will be able to start a Live video. If you are below that or your account is private, the message you see is about eligibility, not punishment.
The same page adds two more reasons Live may not be available:
- You may not be able to start a live video if you've previously posted something that was removed for going against the Community Standards.
- Newly created accounts may not be able to go Live.
Reporting at the time also noted that Live is off by default for teen accounts, which need a parent's permission to turn it on.
Rule change or restriction? How to tell
- Check the basics. Is the account public? Does it have at least 1,000 followers? Is it more than a few weeks old?
- Open Account Status. Go to your profile, open the menu and tap Account Status. Look under Features you can't use. If Live or another feature is listed there, it is a restriction tied to a violation.
- Read the wording. “Only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more…” is an eligibility message. A message about removed content, or a listed end date, is a restriction.
Other features that can be restricted
The same Account Status screen covers more than Live. Restrictions we often see include:
- creating ads or promoting posts;
- monetization tools such as subscriptions, gifts or branded content;
- sending messages to people who don't follow you;
- adding links or using certain stickers;
- appearing in recommendations (see our shadowban check guide).
Meta's Restricting accounts page says that for more severe policies you may receive longer restrictions from certain features, such as creating ads and using Live, starting on your first strike, and that you can see how long restrictions last in Account Status.
How to get features back
If it is an eligibility issue
There is nothing to appeal. Make the account public if that suits you, and grow past 1,000 followers with genuine followers. Buying followers to reach the threshold puts the whole account at risk.
If it is a restriction
- In Account Status, open the restriction and the content that caused it.
- If a review is offered and you believe the removal was wrong, request it once. Meta says that if content is found to follow the Community Standards, it is restored and the strike and restriction are removed.
- If the removal was fair, wait for the end date. Avoid posting similar content in the meantime, because new strikes can extend restrictions.
- Read our guide to Community Guidelines strikes to see how removals add up over a year.
Monetization restrictions
Monetization tools have their own eligibility rules on top of the Community Guidelines, including Instagram's partner monetization policies. If a monetization feature disappears, check both Account Status and the monetization status shown in your professional dashboard.
Going Live without new strikes
- Do not stream content you don't have rights to, such as TV broadcasts, sports or concerts. Live streams are reviewed like any other content and IP violations count too.
- Moderate comments, especially in large streams. Use comment filters and pin your rules.
- Be careful with guests. Content from a guest in your Live can still be associated with your stream.
- Keep Live titles and thumbnails in line with the guidelines; they are reviewed too.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using a second account to go Live while the first is restricted. Meta's policies treat accounts used to evade restrictions as violations in their own right.
- Third-party streaming tools that need your password. Use Instagram's own Live Producer for desktop streaming.
- Assuming a missing button is a bug. Check eligibility and Account Status before reinstalling or switching phones.
When to get help
Most Live and feature issues are solved by the steps above. If restrictions keep stacking up, or you believe a run of removals was wrong and your account is heading toward a suspension, Unbanz can review the history. We are an independent service, not affiliated with Meta. Start with a free case check through Instagram account recovery; you get a quote before any work. Accepted cases typically take an estimated 3–14 days, Meta decides the outcome, and we never ask for your password or codes.
