What Instagram actually does
“Shadowban” is an informal word for content being hidden without notice. What Instagram documents is recommendation eligibility. Its help page explains that recommendations help people discover accounts they don't already follow, in places like Explore, Reels, Feed Recommendations, Search and Suggested Accounts. Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines decide what content from public accounts is eligible to be recommended.
Three points from that page clear up most of the confusion:
- The guidelines only apply to public accounts and to recommendations to people who don't follow you. Even if you are not eligible, your content can still show up for your followers.
- If your account is not eligible, none of your content will be recommended, whether or not every post goes against the guidelines.
- Being eligible doesn't guarantee your content will be recommended. Eligibility is the gate, not the reach.
How to check (professional accounts)
If you use a professional (business or creator) account, you can see your recommendation status in Account Status:
- Go to your profile and open the menu.
- Tap Account Status below “More info and support”.
- Look at whether your content and your account can be recommended to non-followers.
According to Instagram, Account Status lets you see whether something in your profile, such as your profile photo or bio, goes against the Recommendations Guidelines, see a sample of content that can't be recommended right now and which guideline applies, view content removed for breaking the Community Standards, and edit or remove content that goes against the guidelines.
If you have a personal account
Recommendation details are shown for professional accounts. Switching to a free professional account in Settings is the simplest way to see them. You can also still check Account Status for removed content and restricted features on any account.
If Account Status shows a problem
- Open the sample content Instagram shows you and read the guideline it cites.
- Edit or remove it if you agree it crosses the line. For a profile photo or bio issue, change the photo or wording.
- Request a review if you believe it was wrongly flagged. Instagram says that if your content goes against the Recommendations Guidelines, you may be eligible to request a review.
- Check again after a few days. Account-level status can take time to update.
What tends to be non-recommendable
Instagram's Recommendations Guidelines cover content that is allowed on the platform but not suggested to strangers, for example borderline sexually suggestive content, some sensitive or graphic material, content flagged as false by fact-checkers, and low-quality or reposted content. If you post close to those lines, expect less reach from non-followers even when nothing is removed.
If Account Status is clear but reach still dropped
Then the cause is not an eligibility problem. Common real reasons are:
- Format and timing changes. Instagram's ranking changes over time, and what worked six months ago may not work now.
- Unoriginal content. Reposts and aggregated clips tend to perform worse than original work.
- A drop in engagement rate. Bought or inactive followers drag down how your posts perform with real people.
- Seasonality or audience shifts.
Use Insights to compare reach from followers and non-followers. If follower reach is steady and non-follower reach dropped, look at the content itself rather than the account.
Myths and mistakes to avoid
- Third-party “shadowban checker” sites cannot see your account status. Only Instagram's own Account Status can.
- Banned-hashtag lists go out of date quickly. Use a small number of specific, relevant hashtags instead.
- Deleting and reposting the same content rarely helps and can look spammy.
- Buying engagement to “boost” a limited account makes the signals worse.
A simple two-week check routine
If you think your reach is limited, give yourself a structured two weeks instead of guessing. On day one, screenshot Account Status and your Insights for the last 30 days. Fix or remove anything Account Status flags. Then post your normal mix of original content at your usual pace, without hashtag experiments or deleted reposts. On day fourteen, compare non-follower reach with your day-one screenshots. That tells you far more than any checker website.
