Short answer
Instagram asks people to log in and use their accounts, but it doesn’t publish a rule that frees usernames after a set number of months. So a quiet account usually keeps its handle. The risks are the other ways a name changes hands.
How a username actually leaves an account
- You rename or delete the account. The old name goes back into the pool after Instagram’s holding period and anyone can grab it.
- The account gets hacked. Hackers often change the handle and sell or squat the original.
- The account is removed for breaking the rules. Impersonation, spam or fake activity can get an account taken down.
- A trademark report. If your handle matches someone’s registered trademark and confuses people, they can report it through Meta’s IP process.
How to keep your handle
- Log in every so often and post or interact a little.
- Turn on two-factor authentication with an app, not just SMS.
- Keep your email and phone up to date so you can recover the account.
- Don’t rename “just for a day”. Someone may be watching the name.
