How Threads and Instagram are connected
Most Threads profiles are created with an Instagram account. Instagram's help page on managing Threads settings explains that changes to your Instagram account in Accounts Center affect the Threads profile associated with it, and that deactivating or deleting the Instagram account also deactivates or deletes the Threads profile created with it. Deactivating or deleting only your Threads profile does not affect Instagram.
That is why there are three different situations:
- Only Threads is restricted or suspended. Instagram keeps working.
- Instagram is suspended or disabled. Threads becomes unavailable as a result.
- Both are affected because the violation or the account issue applies across Meta.
Step 1: Work out which situation you're in
- Try logging in to Instagram. If you see a suspended or disabled notice there, deal with Instagram first; see our guide to appealing an Instagram suspension.
- If Instagram works, open Threads and read the exact message.
- Check Threads Account Status. Instagram's Threads Account Status page says you can view content removed for going against the Community Standards and features you can no longer use, and notes that in most cases you'll get a warning before losing access to your account.
- Screenshot every screen with the date.
If your Threads profile was disabled
Instagram's disabled Threads profiles page says that if your Threads profile was disabled you'll see a message when you try to log in, that profiles that don't follow the Community Standards may be disabled, and that in certain regions profiles may be disabled for people in a specific age range under local laws.
If you think it was a mistake, the page says you may be able to ask for a review by opening the app, entering your username and password, and following the on-screen instructions. If you don't see a disabled message at all, you may be dealing with a login issue rather than enforcement.
The Threads suspension form
Instagram's Help Center also has a form titled “My Threads profile was suspended”. It says it is for people whose Threads profiles were suspended for violating the Community Guidelines, repeat intellectual property violations, or sharing fraudulent or misleading content. It asks for your name, email, Threads username and an explanation of why you believe the profile should not have been suspended. Use it in addition to, not instead of, any in-app review you are offered.
What to write
Keep it brief and factual. Say what you use Threads for, which posts you think were misread and why, and that the Instagram account it is linked to is yours. Don't paste long templates.
If only some Threads features are restricted
Restrictions listed in Threads Account Status, such as limits on posting, replying or being recommended, work much like Instagram's. Open each removed post, request a review if you believe it followed the rules, and otherwise let the restriction run its course. Meta counts strikes across its apps, so read our guide to Community Guidelines strikes to see how they add up and expire.
If your Threads was used by someone else
Threads help sends hacked users to the same flow as Instagram. If someone posted on Threads after taking over your Instagram account, recover Instagram first through instagram.com/hacked, then review Threads. See our guide to hacked Instagram account recovery.
Mistakes to avoid
- Deleting your Instagram account to “reset” Threads. It deletes the Threads profile too.
- Creating a new Instagram account just to get back on Threads while the original is suspended. Meta's policies cover accounts made to evade enforcement.
- Asking friends to mass-report your suspension through “Report a problem.” It doesn't change the review outcome and can clutter your case.
How long Threads reviews take
Meta doesn't publish a fixed review time for Threads. Submit the in-app review and, if relevant, the form once, then watch the email linked to your Instagram account, including spam, for messages from Instagram or Meta domains. Keep screenshots of every submission and any reference numbers so you can follow up accurately.
